SHE’LL ROCK HIS WORLD
After weeks on a sold-out tour, singer Cady Ward is coming home for the holidays. But after one too many episodes of fan-craziness, Cady’s manager decides that she needs protection—in the form of muscled cop Conn McCormick. Longing for peace and quiet to prepare before her next album drops, Cady doesn’t need a bodyguard just to deal with some vague email threats…though she can’t deny that close proximity to Conn’s body is a very nice place to be.
Conn is in the midst of a career scandal when his boss assigns him to pop-star guard duty. It’s a poor use of his skills, even though Cady’s feisty nature proves the perfect distraction for Conn while Internal Affairs investigates his case. What begins as a sizzling attraction becomes something deeper than either Conn or Cady could have expected. But when Conn uncovers the sinister plan behind the threats to Cady, he’s faced with a professional dilemma: To save her life, will he risk having a future with the only woman who’s ever touched his soul?
Going Deep (Alpha Ops #5) by Anne Calhoun is somewhat different to the earlier books in the series, not in a bad way, but different. It is 352 pages long and every word can be savoured, it’s crisp and clean. Cady , known to her fans as “Maud” is at the end of her first long tour, having hit the “big time” after years busking on street corners and working small gigs in clubs & bars. She is exhausted and more than ready for some down-time at home with family. But where there is stardom there are always the crazies, even in her hometown on the last night of her tour. And the two local cops on duty, who stop the drunken fan are Matt (who we met in an earlier book in the series) and Conn McCormick, who has a problem at work meaning he’s about to have some free time and is available to be Cady’s bodyguard. Their connection is obvious from the time they meet, but Cady doesn’t see the threats to be as great as her manager and does her best to make life difficult for Conn, who just wants to protect her. When someone gains entry to her house and things start to go missing, it’s obvious there is a problem to be solved. Cady has begun to admit that she might actually need Conn, not only in her bed, but as her bodyguard as well. Throw in a bratty, younger sister, more problems at the PD & suspicious behavior by Chris, her manager and there is tension all round. Conn decides to take matters into his own hands but is worried that Cady will see it as a betrayal; all the while they are becoming closer and even falling for each other. But she’s going to be leaving after her break, heading back to record an album and Conn has no plans to leave the only job he’s ever wanted. Will they reach a stalemate or is love always the answer?
Anne Calhoun manages to drag feelings out of the most closed off character till they are raw and exposed; she does this so well, it’s like we have to keep reading. There really is no way you could close this book at any point before “The End” and stop reading. Anne Calhoun has quickly become a must read author for me & I only picked up the first book in this series in March this year. Going Deep (Alpha Ops, #5)is a stand alone read, so even if you haven’t read any other titles in this story, this one is definitely a “must read”. – Reviewed by Morilyn Carter
