Nothing shines like classic cars under the Miami heat. With engines revving hot and emotions running high, sparks are sure to fly . . .
Tori Chazov isn't exactly the girl next door. For one, if the neighbors found out she's an FBI asset and the daughter of a KGB defector, she'd have to grab her go bag and run. Then there's her day job: making magic happen under the hood of big beautiful muscle cars. She's more likely to be wearing engine grease than mascara, and most guys don't fantasize about their mechanics.
But then most girls don't fantasize about FBI tech geniuses, either, and Tori has it bad for Emery Martin. Emery has a past. She can see it in the way he keeps his body honed like a weapon, in the mysterious scars under his snap-button shirts. She can see it in the way his eyes follow her around the room, even though he never says a word.
He's going to have to start talking now, though. A vicious Russian hit squad is on the way to Miami to take Tori out for good. And without Emery's help, she might not make her last great escape . . .

Review

Sidney Bristol is a new author to me and Shift is the second book of the Hot Rides Series. This story can be read as a standalone, but I think reading the first installment of Hot Rides would give you a better background.

Tori Chazov isn’t her real name, but to keep her and her sister alive they have to attract little attention as possible, but for Tori that becomes a bit difficult when she shows off her mad skills of being a woman mechanic when Emery strolls in.

Most men don’t fantasize about their mechanic, but Emery isn’t like most men.

Emery isn’t who Tori believes, but he just got word that a vicious Russian hit squad is on their way to finish Tori off for good. Instead of taking a backseat he put everything on the line to save her, but when pleasure starts mixing with business both Tori and Emery might make a mistakes that will cost both their lives.

In the beginning In the beginning .Shift seemed to start off at a slow pace, but around 30% it started to speed up. I enjoyed Tori’s character of how she was spunky, intelligent and finding out she was a former spy. She also managed to get him to talk about himself which you could tell was an uncomfortable topic. As much as I loved Tori, I thought I would have connected with Emery, but sadly I wasn’t able too. Like I said before, he’s been in his own shell and never really had to communicate with people, but found his emotional mood swings frustrating. One minute he’s strong and utterly confident and then the next he’s a young boy who’s insecure and unsure. I understand where Sidney was going with this, but I felt like his emotions switched too much that I couldn’t keep up, it seemed to take away from the story of having someone coming after Tori.

However, I enjoyed the connection between Tori and Emery because she was able to not only bring Emery out of his shell, but we got to see the man beneath all the scars his parent and ungrateful brother had inflicted emotionally. Overall I found the story interesting and the build up for their chemistry was great! – Reviewed by Julianne Knutson
