Cold, fine drops of rain fall softly on my cheeks as I emerge from the darkness of the ship's interior to the gray, overcast sky of the main deck. Pulling my dark pea coat tighter to my body, the wind lifts red tendrils of my hair. I walk slowly to the railing overlooking the water. I catch my first sight of the Irish coastline; its craggy landscape makes me shiver in dread. I find it difficult to imagine now how the Gancanagh had made this their home for so long without anyone realizing it. The cold, moss-covered edifices practically scream their presence. As I study the shadows between the falling-down stone, I imagine creeping shapes of undead Faeries grasping the rock, waiting for our ship to draw nearer to their position. Tipping my face up, I let the rain wash over me. It bathes away the frigid sweat of fear that has broken on my brow. "You don't know how fiercely beautiful you are, do you?" A quiet voice behind me asks, causing me to stiffen and fix my eyes on the rocks along the shoreline.
If I could give this book more than five stars, I would, because it is that good!
Kricket always knew she was different. Her violet eyes and hair that did something she couldn’t explain make her stand out. She spent most of her life in the foster system, but was able to break free. Living on her own with her best friend, she stays under the radar. She works jobs getting paid under the table and stays out of trouble. She doesn’t want to be put back on the map and be forced back into the system. Her eighteenth birthday is fast approaching and she soon will be free.
Trey, OMG I love him. He swoops in and goes right for Kricket. He’s on a mission and needs to bring her back to where she is from – a place she never knew existed. Trey isn’t the only one after her, though. Kyon sees her as his and wants to bring her back to his home (he’s from a different part of Ethar). You see, he knows all about Kricket’s talents – both apparent and yet to be discovered.
She is a force to be reckoned with. She’s small, but feisty, and I love that about her. Kricket goes with Trey, by force, back to her true home. What happens there is a series of events that will leave you falling in love, sitting on the edge of your seat, and wishing for the demise of a few characters.
This book was nothing short of amazing. Everything was expertly done – character development, storyline, pace, it had all of the essential parts to make a story you can’t put down. Amy Bartol – you have a new fan in me. Now it’s time for me to dive into book two.
